Four Things to Remember When Pursuing Your Dreams

IMAG0269

Hello beautiful people!

I apologize for being M.I.A. , I have been rehearsing for showcase updating my resume, getting my costumes together and such. I just realized yesterday (October 31st) makes two years since I left South Florida (to pursue my dreams of becoming an actress) and drove out to Los Angeles. The drive itself took about three days, but that’s a story for another time!

Two years later I am still pursing acting now in Atlanta. I am proud to say I don’t regret going to Los Angeles. I have some great connections out there and am more familiar with a variety of areas in Los Angeles.

Four things I have learned over the past two years about pursing your dreams.

1. God laughs when you make plans.

Meaning everyone always says you need a plan. While a plan is important you also need to be flexible. I am a firm believer in walking by faith. Every time I said, “Lord I am going to let your will be done. Please guide my path in neon lights so I know which way to go, because I am completely blind!” As a result he has always provided a way. Even when I was freaking out and down to my last ten bucks a job opportunity would appear and a new opportunity to work in the film industry would arrive.

2. Moving is a great way to find out who your real friends are.

Often times we make friendships of convenience. Sometimes it’s a friend we grew up with, lived near or ate lunch with so we wouldn’t have to sit alone in the cafeteria. Sadly every friendship is not for a lifetime. That does not mean this person was not important to you it just means you each grew into different people, with contrasting views of the world and probably could not agree to disagree. Looking back I realize a friend who never celebrates your victories is not a friend. A true friend is shouting from the roof tops all your accomplishments along with you. Instead of belittling your accomplishments and then expecting you to celebrate their own. When I moved my friends constantly tagged me in Memes on Instagram, called, texted and help reach out to any connections they had. These people are part of my tribe. I have continued to keep in touch with them even through different time zones. I’d like to thank Instagram DM messages and WhatsApp voice recordings for keep my group and I connected.

3. Ignore the naysayers

There will always be people to play devils advocate. Misery loves company and sometimes other people are afraid to purse their dreams so they will try to hold you back from yours. You have to live your life for you. You only get ONE make it count!

4. When Plan A doesn’t work make another Plan A.

Put your heart into Plan A. Think of every possible negative and positive outcome. Then think about why you want to pursue this. Is it because other people told you too? Is it because you actually want to jump out of bed in the morning to purse this industry? Or is it for financial gain? Is this your passion? Would you do it for free for a little bit, if it meant turning into a long-term career? Next evaluate each method, select the best and execute it as plan A. After all the A stands for Astonishing. Definition: Extremely surprising or impressively amazing. Because when you achieve your dreams everyone will stare at you in astonished silence, because that is exactly what you are, astonishing.

7 Reasons You Need to See Cirque Du Soleil

I’ve wanted to see Cirque Du Soleil for years, but never had the opportunity to go. My mom gifted me with tickets this year for my birthday and I must say I will make it a priority to go from now on! Cirque Du Soleil was founded in 1984 in Canada. The entire concept was to think of how a modern circus would be, they used juggling and fire breathing to create a spectacle.

  1. The colorful detailed costumes. In the beginning of the show these two beautiful birds came out with long wings that they fluttered. The bright emerald green, cobalt and violet. There was a butterfly whose giant wings spread across and fluttered in the wind. Ever costume moved with the performer seamlessly.
  2. The breath-taking stunts. The sheer athletic ability of these performers is worth going! I know you’re thinking it’s so expensive, but when you see how many performers are swinging from the ceiling, flipping off their friends backs and shimmying up poles you’ll honestly think they deserved more $$$.
  3. Every Cirque has a different storyline they have done shows based on Avatar, the Beatles, Crystal and the Luzia one I saw.
  4. Cirque, brings back the childhood feeling of wonder. How do they come up with these ideas, colors, story lines and script.
  5. They use the five of the elements of drama: plot, theme, characters, music, spectacle. There is also a mystical use of water and wind.
  6. You will come out inspired and energized to do new things. Whether that’s writing, working out, acting or singing.
  7. Unlike other circuses you don’t need to worry about animal abuse. There are no animals in the show!

26th Birthday and the Atlanta Botanical Garden!

This past Saturday, I celebrated my 26th birthday! I must say it was the best one yet. I was surrounded by supportive women, got to check out the Atlanta Botanical Garden, see Cirque Du Soleil Mexico and had a phenomenal first rehearsal for showcase!

The Atlanta Botanical Garden has been on my radar since before I moved here. They currently have a cool exhibit called The Curious Garden, which is stunning! As I strolled through the gardens with my gals I could not help, but reflect on how blessed I feel. This year is the first post-grad year that I feel truly comfortable with where I am in my life. In the past I was still trying to get the lay of the land of the city I was in, trying to find a steady job, trying to find a friend group, chase my dreams, find sometime to eat healthy, and date. All of it felt exhausting. There were so many days I tried to stay positive, but felt like my dreams were closer to fiction than reality. So I moved again since the opportunities were pulling me in another direction. I have learned that it is okay to say no and put yourself first. When you say no to pleasing other people (family included), dealing with their drama, or even disagreeing with their suggestions on how you should live your life; you finally feel free. This year I learned that I love spending time with me. There’s nothing better than spending time with the people you love, but there is something truly beautiful about being comfortable eating alone, talking to strangers and actively pursuing your dreams.

At dinner we talked about how in your mid-twenties you finally start to feel like you know who you are and what you want. Whether that’s to start your own resume and life-coaching business like one friend of mine, or nanny while getting your masters degree like another gal is. We laughed about our crazy dating stories (current and past)! Then, we discussed how every time we thought we had everything all planned out God would close one door and open a bigger, brighter, better door. The horrific bullying and harassment in one job lead a friend to starting her own business. Which caused her to attend a networking event she never would have gone to and met me! The craziness of her previous job taught her how to handle difficult people going forward and not be afraid to stick up for herself. It’s crazy to think if certain events never happened then certain amazing individuals never would have crossed our path. I know if I had stayed in LA, I never would have met my acting partner who I think will genuinely be a lifelong friend.

IMAG0210
What you can’t fully see is the beautiful chandelier hanging in this Orchid Garden!

Showcase! I am so excited for acting showcase. What is showcase? Well for acting it is when a bunch of acting students preform a scene or monologue and invite agents, managers and casting directors to watch. This is how most actors get their agents and managers since they know these actors have been trained and know how to behave professionally on set.

IMAG0203

My acting partner is a great listener, hardworking and incredibly humble. He is the partner dreams are made of and we compliment each other so well. Our first rehearsal with our director was this past Sunday and when we finished our first run through she stared at us in silence for a moment. Then said, “Damn I’m good. I cast you two for this so perfectly. You two are more comfortable together in the first meeting than most people are by week four. Keep it up guys this was an amazing place to start I can’t wait to see how much you’ll progress in the next few weeks”. Honestly I have been on cloud nine ever since and all I can say is that dream I have of being a professional actor is so close I can smell it. Next post I’m going to share my review on Cirque Du Soleil! I hope you all have a fantastic week and take the time to start accomplishing your dreams!

Four Trends for Fall in Collaboration with High Style Life

Today I have a fabulous guest blogger post! I would like to introduce to you all to Sam from the High Style Life! Her site often features contributor articles about  travel, beauty, fashion, lifestyle and entertainment. Without further ado:

Untitled12Fall is almost around the corner, and if you want to know what’s hot and what’s not in terms of fashion trends – just make sure to stay with us and keep on reading. Here are top four trends you’ll love to rock this season!

Trouser suits on point

Untitled13

It seems that celebrities from all over the globe can’t get enough of this two-piece trend lately, and there are definitely great reasons for that! Trouser suits are extremely versatile (even though they don’t seem so at first sight), simply because they come in so many colors, patterns, and shapes. From monochromatic to sequined pieces, from wide-legged to skinny ones – all of these styles will be more than welcome because this trend will be gaining momentum this fall. Famous ladies like Zendaya, Rihanna, Emma Stone, Suki Waterhouse, Hillary Clinton, and Susan Sarandon love rocking trouser suits, and we can’t blame them for that. These are figure-flattering pieces that will accentuate your attributes in the best possible way, so make sure not to skip them under any circumstances this season!

Folklore and craftsmanship as the ultimate fashion trend

Untitled16

Folklore fashion and fine craftsmanship have always been linked to boho chic, and if you want to be a real boho babe this fall – be sure to get some heavily embellished items and trendy pieces that feature some ditsy prints. Obsession with folklore is still going strong this season, and designers like Gucci and Dolce and Gabbana incorporated a variety of textiles, techniques, and traditional embroideries from a range of different countries into their latest collections. This trend was massive this summer, when ladies were more than glad to get fabulous resort wear for their summer vacations like colorful playsuits from Australia. These were pieces that featured a cool clash of colors and prints that stunned everyone around. Such items can be worn even during the fall – just make sure to layer up and tone down your overall combo by picking just one statement piece!

Don’t be afraid to make a statement

Untitled15

Having your own opinion and being able to speak about it openly in public is not what many people are comfortable to do, and you know what? If you can’t do it like that, you can do it through your fashion choices! The trend of wearing some inspirational quotes and statements started this spring, with “We should all be feminists” T-shirts by Christian Dior. This is one of the best ways to express your thoughts, attitudes, and personal opinions without saying anything out loud. However, that doesn’t mean that your voice won’t be heard – on the contrary, you definitely won’t remain unnoticed and everyone will be able to see what you’re thinking about. So, if you live by the rule which says “Fries before guys”, don’t be afraid to show that to the world!

Futuristic designs on the rise

Untitled14Not many designers went intergalactic this season, but those who had the courage actually did a very good job, making this trend more than appropriate for fall. Karl Lagerfeld nailed it at Chanel, combining a classic tweed jacket with a quilted silver blanket that inevitably brings that out-of-this-world vibe. On the other hand, Saint Laurent covered everything in thousands of sparkling crystals, which may be your cup of tea if you’re into bling from head to toe. Michael Kors is quite into fabrics that look like liquid silver, and we have to agree that these seem really extraterrestrial but wearable at the same time. You certainly won’t make a mistake if you pick any of these pieces this fall!

Each of these four trends is more than popular among the fashionistas this fall for many great reasons, which is why people are massively embracing them. If you want to look trendy and stylish this season, just pick one of them you love most and you definitely won’t make a mistake!

Hurricane Irma

Hello darlings!

screen-capture-1

This week has been insane. With Irma hitting the Caribbean, Florida, Georgia and South Carolina killing all on the same time as September 11th, is absolutely heartbreaking. I am so thankful to say I am safe. My apartment did not suffer any damages and I only lost power for three hours. I have many Facebook friends in Florida who are still without power. Some who are literally sleeping in a friend’s home, because their home flooded. I am a firm believer that when bad things happen it is to make humanity better. There are so many people who finally talked to their neighbors, shared ice with others and offered water bottles. Just the simple things like showing more kindness, instead of just rushing through the day and avoiding eye contact with strangers. I told my friend I am sorry about her family home and that she is a beautiful human being who will be blessed ten times over financially and materialistically. I truly do believe, things can be replaced, but people cannot. I was truly stunned by the flooding in Houston, India, Nepal and Bangladesh. I wish I could do more financially to help in these situations, but can only offer prayer at this point in my life. I will say seeing celebrities, athletes come together for Hand in Hand and Google step it up and donate to help people proves that there are good people out there. Now we just need to focus on making a smaller carbon footprint in the world, in the hopes of minimizing the destruction of these natural disasters.

It has been surreal to see the photos of downtown Miami literally looking like a part of the Atlantic Ocean with no separation of street or sand from the sea. I know eventually the water will recede; people will sweep the sand back onto the beach and begin to rebuild my beloved sunshine state. After all just like the palm trees that cover South Florida, Floridians bend during times of adversity and pop back up stronger than ever.

Florida I love you and I know you will prove to the world we are not just the home of crazy headlines. ❤

Dragon Con

Atlanta is a fascinating city. Famous for hot summers, peaches, a massive International airport, the World of Coca-Cola,  the Civil Rights Movement and many convention meetings. I have never heard of Dragon Con, but a friend mentioned it to me on Friday. She said it was essentially Halloween on steroids, with everyone in costumes and drinking downtown. So naturally we gathered a group and headed on down! I did not have a costume, but I will next year! The creativity I witnessed was amazing. I saw tons of Poison Ivy’s, Star Wars characters, Rick and Morty’s, Disney princesses, a Pickle, a guy in a banana hammock with a black a sensor bar (strategically placed) and tons of lingerie.

The point of Dragon Con (aside from the different lectures and conferences) is to be yourself. This is the one place people can literally dress however they want and run around pretty much naked without being judged. It made me so happy to feel the happy energy of everyone after all the horror and tragedy in the U.S. Most of people I talked to said they plan out their costumes a year in advance and look forward to meeting up with people from across the country this one time every year. I am horrible at coming up with Halloween costumes, but aim to take my time this year coming up with a creative costume for Dragon Con next year!

Do you have any costume ideas for me? Honestly I think Wonder Woman was pretty inspiring, even though everyone wants to be her 🙂

Flip Burger

Sometimes you just want a burger. Not the delicious healthy spinach, sundried tomato, anchovies, lemon and hard-boiled-egg salad you had for lunch. I’m not talking about a fast food burger like Wendy’s (which in my opinion is the best of fast food burgers and fries haha). You want a cozy place you can sit down that does not feel like it’s covered in a layer of grease. Flip Burger Boutique in Buckhead is that place. Owned by Chef Richard Blais the Top Chef winner. The burger I ordered was called a Oaxaca was juicy, had a little bit of seasoning, but did not drip all over the place. I have had guacamole on a burger, but I have never had salsa, avocado and mushroom. I am pretty biased, since I love salsa and guacamole. The combination of diced red onion, chopped tomatoes, sautéed mushrooms and black angus beef was pretty heavenly. I ordered a side of their house chips. Which I ate before I took a photo, which I know makes me a bad blogger apologies. They were good, but a little over cooked in my opinion.

IMAG0109

The cool thing about Flip Burger Boutique, is they have their own nitrogen tank. They use it to make creamy milkshakes. While milkshakes do not usually agree with me, I could not resist trying the Nutella and Burnt Marshmallow. The marshmallows are slightly burnt with the torch. Which made me think about making smores every summer with my friend Stephanie for her campout birthday. I loved the gooey, slightly burnt contrast to the chocolately sweet creamy shake. The shake was small enough for one person to enjoy without feeling overly full. They also have a strawberry shortcake flavor which sounds devine!Screenshot_20170821-230140Screenshot_20170821-230146

The decor is modern with the most comfortable booths I have ever sat in. It felt like I was leaning and sitting on a marshmallow cloud. When you look up, you will notice the ceiling looks the same as the table and booth on the floor. Part of the Flipped charm! I love the pop art touch on the ceiling and how elegant this restaurant feels. The TV’s are framed with painted Victorian style frames.

HTC U11 Review

In a world of iPhone lovers I am an Android girl. Even though I am typing this on a Mac. What can I say I like to give my money to everyone hahaha. My HTC One finally died after 4 beautiful years so I decided to get another HTC. Sadly, they are no longer sold at AT&T so I ordered mine directly from the website. After researching multiple reviews to make sure this phone worked well and (did not catch on fire). Everyone said it was incredibly fast, took wide shot stunning photos and looked amazing.
The packaging was absolutely beautiful. This beautiful little sleek white box.

The HTC U11 included a cleaning cloth, headphones, clear case, headphone adaptor and charger.
Colors: This phone comes in Sapphire Blue, Orange, Black and a Light Blue. Covered in Gorilla glass so it is absolutely stunning.

Features: one of my favorite features is the split screen. I have never seen a phone with the ability to split screen. You can have your text messages up and browse the internet or look at your calendar. The camera has a crystal clear wide lens. You can squeeze the two vertical sides of the phone to go directly to camera. Then, you can squeeze the sides to snap a photo. You can unlock your phone using the fingerprint pad and a passcode. The battery is amazing. I use to leave my phone plugged in at work about two hours into the day, then charge it again when I got home. On the HTC U11 I use it all day and my battery ranges between 36 – 50 percent by the time I come home. It charges in under 20 minutes! Which brings me joy, since I need my phone to work for Instagram and Maps when I head out to meet friends.

Girls Trip Review

I saw the movie Girls Trip a few weekends back and have been meaning to post about it. If you are looking for a film that will make you laugh this is it. I promise you’ll walk out with sore abs! Girls Trip is about four best friends who have not seen each other in years and meet up again to go to the Essence Festival in New Orleans. We all know how hard it can be to meet up with your friends and keep in touch when you move to different places. This film stars Jada Pinkett Smith, Queen Latifah, Regina Hall and fabulous new comer Tiffany Haddish! Tiffany is an absolute scene stealer. She is a magnetic actress on screen and a completely fearless comedian! In many scenes my friend and I thought she out shined one of her fellow actresses, which is shocking, since this is an incredibly talented cast. Girls Trip in a nutshell felt like a great weekend of drinking with college friends, laughing at men, going on crazy adventures with your girls and realizing no matter what happened in the past you’ll always be there for each other. Rotten Tomatoes gave Girls Trip an 87% rating, which is amazing since Rotten Tomatoes usually rates most films incredibly low.

This is one of the few films that passes the Bechdel test. The Bechdel test uses three criteria to determine if a film portrays female characters in a realistic way. In many films there is only one female character in the film. Usually the female character is a wife, girlfriend etc. If there is more than one female character, when they are in a scene together they only talk about a guy or wanting to find a guy. The three criteria used to test a film for the Bechdel method is the following: it has to have at least two women in it, who talk to each other about something besides a man. Simple, but shockingly a lot of films do not pass this test. Throughout the film the ladies talk about their memories with each other and the ups/downs of their friendships.

There is some nudity, but I do not want to give anything away so I won’t say anymore!

I will say you can tell this film was written by women and it is beyond refreshing. One of those women is the same boss lady who writes for Blackish. (Which I highly recommend, it’s witty, relevant, comedic and endearing)!

This film has a little bit of the Hangover, with a splash of Bad Mom and a ton of girl power, to remind you that no matter what happens in life your best friends will always have your back.

Step Up Magazine Collaboration

Step Up Magazine is an digital magazine, founded by Seri Roth. The motto of Step Up is “The magazine that inspires Doers, Thinkers and Givers”. Ms. Roth often features individuals who are philanthropic innovators and leaders. I absolutely love that she started a magazine with the purpose of making the world a better place. She is the founder of A Dollar Campaign, which is a non-profit charity that raises money to support research for pediatric cancer. This really touched me, since I usually try to participate in Cards for Hospitalized Kids in July and December. I know making homemade cards does not financially help, but sometimes a simple gesture of kindness can make all difference in the world.

When Ms. Roth approached me about putting together a woman boss outfit I was super excited! Then, I realized I could not select just one. So I put together three fun #womanboss outfits.

The first outfit I thought of was a neutral one, with a modern print. This can be worn by the girl who does not want her outfit to distract from her face. It can be worn when you have a speaking engagement and want to look chic. This is a star print jumpsuit with tan close toed heels. I also like that it has a slight cut out in the back.

Keri_Elaine_Step_Magazine34Keri_Elaine_Step_Magazine36Keri_Elaine_Step_Magazine33Keri_Elaine_Step_Magazine30

The second outfit I thought of was a jumpsuit that you can wear to meetings during the day that transitions to date at night. This royal blue jumpsuit has a side tie bow detail that is figure flattering. You can pair it with a lightly embellished pink cardigan and sparkly ballet flat. Or you could throw on a black blazer and black flats.

Keri_Elaine_Step_Magazine48Keri_Elaine_Step_Magazine52Keri_Elaine_Step_Magazine56Keri_Elaine_Step_Magazine57Keri_Elaine_Step_Magazine58

The third outfit I thought of is for the woman who is not afraid to turn heads. This is an outfit you can wear if you want to leave an impression. Every time I wear this dress people tell me they love the color. Do not be afraid to mix a neon and a pastel. The pastel will tone down the brightness of a neon dress and you can play up some light embellishments on your cardigan instead of a necklace.

Keri_Elaine_Step_Magazine75

Keri_Elaine_Step_Magazine80

Being a woman boss is all about confidence. When you choose an outfit think about looking for one that makes you feel beautiful, comfortable (no one likes itchy fabrics), and ready to take on the world.

Thank you to Step Up Magazine for collaborating with me on this post!
